Drive and Let Live

Description

Although in the humor category, this is actually very serious.
As a spaniard city boy living in the United States, it becomes quite an eyeopener to drive around in the summer. The amount of animals we see laying on the curve every summer is appalling, it does really get to me after a while. I thought there is nothing I can do about it besides trying not to hit any of them myself, but lately I came to the realization I could at least make a tongue-in-cheek tribute to those animals, and in the process maybe help some people grow a conscience about what is going on in our roads every day.

So here's to all those dead animals that I saw, the ones I didn't see, the ones that will be killed this year, and the ones that will survive the daily encounters with cars, trucks and guns. I only wish I could show this to you.

This was the first time I went out and took pictures for a manipulation. At first I thought it was going to be really easy, then really hard, and at the end I realized not only it wasn't so hard to get the pictures I needed, but also that it is so much easier to work with your own images, taken with a premeditated purpose, than to work from stocks whose lighting and color don't match. I will be doing that more in the future!
I also knew I had to do it now, when spring still hasn't hit hard, as I wanted a somewhat grimmer background to the image than pretty green and flowers. As I had shot the car and roads, I came into a dilemma as to what angle should I use. The first idea was to have the scene seen from the side, but after evaluation I came to the conclusion that a front angle was the one who would let me have not only the happy faces large enough, but also include the trail of dead people which wouldn't have been possible from a sideways view.
Let it be known that I do not wish for anybody to be dead on the curve, whether it is human or animal, this is just a light hearted complaint!

Thanks a lot to those who provided stock for this image!! Credits are as follows:

Very true. I laughed pretty hard when I saw this, then read the description, & you're right. I'm from Texas, & hubby is from Louisiana. Animals are a big part of our lives, & we're teaching our son to respect them too. I don't want to give the wrong idea, or paint the wrong picture. We do hunt & fish, but fill our freezer with it so we have food to eat during bad financial times. However, we go out of our way to protect them. All animals, even insects. For example, I'm terrified of spiders, but I didn't want my son to have the same fear just because I do. So, most in our family kill them when they see them. I taught him how to safely pick them up, & carry them outside instead. At my mother in laws house, in the early morning & the dew is still on the ground, the snails are out in full force. There's like 50-100 of them all over the ground. Son & I enjoy going out there & seeing them, talking to them & taking pictures. Family members just go plodding through & crushing them, & I'm like "Hey man, watch your step! Snails at work here." All the time on the roads I see multitudes of ppl not swerving when there's an animal in the road. Now, I'm a realistic person, so I'm not saying I want everyone to swerve & put human lives in danger, BUT I'am saying that if room on the road allows it, why not swerve? All animals are important. They're here for food, companionship, & they help maintain the balance of life. Sorry for giving a book to read. Just giving my 2 cents behind the fav I gave.
