It's a very personal work but it can be applied to everyone. Death as a change, a transformation, as a metaphor, not a real death. It's about big changes in your life, sometimes you have to give up something really important to be able to fly.

I absolutely love this concept, and your execution of the idea is stunning. You did a marvelous job visualizing this. I love how the darkness turns to light (the crows to seagulls and geese) the further the cleansing light moves away from the body. Really beautiful work.

Death is never the end, indeed.
Even in the most un-spiritual way to look at it, the death of one is just seen by others whose lives continue.
It's just part of the process. In this piece I wanted to use it as a metaphor for the change of things, the abrupt end of a time and the beginning of another.

Thank you very much for your comment, I'm glad you liked it!

Samurais believes that the heart was in the belly, and by doing seppuku they will reveal their true nature; if they were good men or evil one, if they were brave or coward, and all that makes them who they are. And this picture perfectly illustrate this way of thinking, very good job! ;)

Nice... really liked to hear that. :)

I did some research on hara-kiri (or seppuku as you well said) before I went into making the artwork. It's worth saying too that it usually was done with a small 20-30cm dagger and not a katana, cause well, unless you have very very long arms it's pretty hard to kill yourself with a long sword lol (and for other reasons that are gruesome and I'll leave out of here haha).
I chose the katana because it's a very "ethnic" weapon and I knew that it would get the idea through better than a small sword handle.

From what I read too, the person doing seppuku would have a sort of assistant that would be ready to behead the person when pain was too much or else. Apparently in many many cases the signal for decapitation was given even before the person doing seppuku had even swung the dagger, meaning that a lot of them may not have been able to do it (not surprising lol), but I guess that speaks on what you mentioned about being brave or a coward.

Anyway, I'm happy that you enjoyed it, thank you very much for your comment. :)

You're welcome! and thank you too for your reply! ^^
Yes, this "assistant is usually someone who has been choosen by the person doing seppuku, à very close friend or familly member for exemple. And the decapitation have to be just partial, the cut must allowed a tiny piece of skin and flesh to retain the head to the body, and this to avoid the head rolling shamefully on the ground. You know, japanese traditions! ^^

Oh I had no idea that a rolling head was considered dishonorable, I suppose it makes sense, it's not the last sight of you that you want people to have. But then considering the way this actually was meant to be (the cuts and all), I don't think "pretty" was part of the idea at all lol.
It was actually much more extreme than the view we usually have where somebody just sticks a sword in himself. :sherlock:

Definitely emotive, you can't even imagine lol. Lots of hidden meanings here, it's very, very personal, to the point I wasn't sure if I could deal with making it public.
But I'm very happy you liked it, thanks a lot for your words!!

I haven't watched Tokyo Ghoul but looked it up now.. I did watch Attack on Titan and Death Note, both seem to be in the same kind of anime genre as TG. =P
Maybe I'll check that one out next. :sherlock:
