Welcome everyone to this new issue of our Group Highlights
series! I know it has taken a while and I apologize as we've had to sort some logistical issues to get this out for you guys.
Today we present a tireless contest group that keeps pushing our imagination and skills every now and again with their challenging ideas, THE3-ContestEvents
. Since many of you might already know the group and these are long time respected deviants, I wanted to take the opportunity to bring them closer to the community and you closer to them by doing the feature in an interview style.
Our three interviewees today are Eve, Lena and Yvonne:
1. Let's talk about you as Deviants. Can you tell us a bit about yourselves and how did you come together to create the group?
I have been on DA for 7 years now, started off looking for stock to do photo-manipulations and then decided I would give back by providing stock. Now I am so busy with my stock I don't have time to do any manips
Through provinding stock I have made many friends here on DA the vast majority of them are stock providers too. Yvonne, Lena and I were brought together by supporting each other through the various ups and downs of stock provision and we became firm personal cyber-friends.
The group was set-up by Yvonne and Lena who very kindly asked me to join them after we had run a few previous contests. They do all the hard work and I tag along
I was a newbie on DA, when I met Yvi (YBsilon
) and Eve (EveLivesey
) for the first time in 2011.
Even at the time Yvonne YBsilon-Stock
had also a stock account and her cutouts were particularly popular. I clearly remember a moment when I first saw Yvi's artwork gallery - it brought me back to my childhood and I just thought: this is incredible! Her artwork gallery was fun and joyful, very creative, full of vivid imagination and was quite different compared to what I was doing.
Eve was known already as a stock photographer with high quality images and for me she was an "old hand" on DA. I used her stock for my photomanipulation and I was very grateful that she offers free high quality photos for my needs. She took the time to comment my work and thus motivated me to keep on going.
I had some pictures on my hard drive and I thought that I would love to share them with other deviants. First, I uploaded a few on my art account and 2 years later, in 2013, I decided to open a stock account.
For me personally my stock account is a depot (over 3000 photos uploaded) and also made for others as a huge stock-library where they can borrow the images and may legally use them for their purposes.
At the beginning I had only a few watchers and very rare uses of my stock, and as Yvi talked to me about her idea of founding
I was immediately enthusiastic about it.
I seized the opportunity to make my stock account more popular and bring my unused stock to life.
Now, we are organizers of contest-events with our own stocks and ideas for already 11 months.
We held 10 contests so far and the 11th is currently running
Fascination With Fright Contest is closed.
PLEASE READ OUR CONTEST RULES CAREFULLY BEFORE ENTERING THE CONTEST.
The Halloween Season is just around the corner, so for a bit of fun this time your task is:
Create a Horror Photo-Manipulation.
Give us the fright of our lives! Freeze our blood! Scare us!
The horror genre is a popular entertainment in the publishing and film industries
and there are a many theories why we love to watch horror movies.
One of the them came from Aristotle. He said that people were attracted to scary stories
because it gave them a chance to purge their negative emotions.
He called it Cath
I started on DA with my art-account YBsilon
5 1/2 years ago. I loved to create whimsical art. I always loved photography and did a lot of it. As I started creating art, I was always searching stocks here and admire PNG-Files. So I had the idea to start with my stock-account 5 years ago. I love to present my photos as PNG-Files, I mostly cut them out with my laptop on my knees watching films on TV or hearing chilled music. I always try to photograph new stocks that way, so that others can make good manipulations with them. It helped me a lot that I had previously made manipulations myself.
I met Lena directly as I started with my art account. I loved her artworks with great textures, I felt that we think alike. I can say she is my best friend on DA, I love her. We don't think alike in every sense and are different persons, but this is the salt in the soup.
We are both living in Germany not too far away from each other, so I hope we will meet one day. It is a pleasure to plan the contests with her.
I met Eve as I started with my art account too. She made beautiful artworks, a style which I loved. She ís a wonderful sensitive and compassionate person. I love her and she is still one of my best and oldest friends on DA. I love her great photos, she is a fantastic photographer.
I love contests and participated in some like ManipulateThis
. The idea to make one was in my mind long time ago, before we started with our first contest. I thought it would be more fun if my friends Eve and Lena were with me. The idea was born and we made a lot of contests with my stock account before we started with our contest group, which we made so that all 3 of us had access to the account. Lena and Eve were enthusiastic about the idea, so we all are!
Contests are always wonderful to have new ideas and it helps to feel the community-togetherness.
2. Could you explain a bit about your previous contests? What were they about, what did inspire the themes?
I think, our previous contests are a great mix of everything a photomanipulator's heart desires.
Our contests can help them to boost the creativity and to overcome lack of inspiration.
We have a wide variety of themes and 29 ideas under preparation.
I am interested in mythology, mystical and historical places and buildings, and specially local landscape areas.
I live in a region where the traces of the past are omnipresent: celtic and roman fortifications, tumuli, ruins of antique temples, medieval castles and abbeys can be visited here.
Before I go on vacation, I do pre-travel planning and I'm looking for a special places to go for inspiration for my stock photos.
Sometimes we visit places and take pictures and share the ideas. The others show their stocks, which could fit for this idea. It could happen that we start with one idea for a contest and end with a very different one. Our stocks inspired us a lot. We always keep in mind whether our members will like the theme and that it is not too difficult. We try to always find new themes, which we haven't seen before, so our contests differ from other contests.
3. Tell us about your current contest.
I am huge fan of horror movies and very interested to know from a psychological point of view why people watch them.
It is a very powerful genre with a wide range of emotions.
Halloween is just around the corner, therefore we thought it is interesting to see and experience how the participants push themselves to their limits.
Our current contest is right now for the time before Halloween. We thought people would love this time to create a dark and scary work. Here's a link to the THE3-ContestEvents' running contest: Fascination With Fright Contest
4. Finally, and as experienced stock artists, do you have any tips or advice for new stockers and manipulators?
There are plenty of journals and tutorials about stock providing here on DA and I would encourage any newbie to read them all
And if you have any questions ask a stock provider that you admire.
New manipulators should be sure they understand the concept of stock and stock rules before posting any artwork, and again if you are not sure, ask, we're a friendly lot here on DA. Rread the tutorials about crediting stock and make sure you follow each stock providers rules - but most of all - have fun, join in competitions and learn by looking at all the great art here on DA.
It would be great if manipulators would read the stock-artists rules and keep in mind that it is a lot of work to photograph and to present stock. In my case it takes a lot of time to make perfect cut-outs. Sometimes I'm sitting hours on a cutout, so no-one could pay my time for this
I love to see the artworks with them, every stock is a little piece of my heart. So I'm very hurt when artists don't follow my rules. I always try to explain the rules, mostly artists are kind. So no Problem.
I think new stock-providers should take a look at other stock-accounts, so they can see a lot. They can also ask for their help, if they have questions. The most important thing is to present only own material, which is made/photographed by themselves.
For new stock providers:
- You should not upload photography that isn't yours as stock.
- Check what your images look like at 100% before submitting them and upload your photos in full size.
- Do not submit third party logos and trademarks of any kind and avoid taking photos of military buildings and objects where the trademark is visible.
- Submit your stock photography to the right category.
- Make friends and ask other stock providers for help.
- And join
- If the stock rules are unclear, you should inform the stock provider about your project and ask for permission to use their stock.
- Credit & inform the stock providers about the stock use. You may use their stock images for free, therefore providing credit and notifying stock artists is a great way to thank them.
- If you follow our rules, we will love YOU and you will be rewarded with art features made by us.
- And finally: join our group: improve your skills, have fun & win fantastic prizes!
So this was it for this issue of CRPhotomanipulation
